6/10/2023 0 Comments Cold steel taipan review![]() The Tai Pan’s® butt terminates in a tapered, semi-pointed pommel to maximize the effect of even the slightest blow. Meticulously fashioned from 300 series VG-1 San Mai IIIstainless steel, the traditional style tsuba and bolster offer both added safety and beauty. Over time, this material and handle shape have proven ideal for preventing the knife from shifting or turning in the hand even under the worst circumstances. With a balance point just behind the guard, the Tai Pan® has subtle "handle heavy" feel making it ideal for insertions yet remaining "lively" in the hand.Īs with the Tanto, the Tai Pan® features a tapered black Kraton® handle with a unique flattened oval cross section. When used with skill, the Tai Pan® can cut a 180° arc up or down or from side to side with devastating effect. The razor sharp twin edges, made of VG-1 San Mai III®, offer twice the potential cuts, slashes, and locks of a single edge knife. While the factory sheath is not perfect for the application, this remains a blade that deserves consideration. The Handle: The Kray-Ex handle is checkered for a positive grip in adverse conditions and is resistant to even the harshest environments. ![]() If you are drawn to the sleek lines and twin edges of a good dagger, you can do far worse than the Tai Pan. Reviews were mixed, with some customers receiving a knife with an uneven and dull blade, while others praised the knifes sharpness and balance. These methods worked okay, but the leather collar of the sheath prevented a truly rapid draw. I like the size of the guard, its big enough to protect your. I tried carrying the knife in its leather sheath by placing it under my belt behind my hip or positioned for a cross draw across my stomach. Handle is perfect size, thickness, soft rubbery texture. This full tang fixed blade has a textured black. A kydex friction-retention sheath with an IWB clip or other mounting means would be more appropriate. The Cold Steel Tai Pan Dagger features a 7.5 VG-10 stainless steel dagger with a silky satin finish. While this is very secure, it isn’t the sheath type I would prefer for a fighting blade. It has a belt loop and a wrap-around leather collar that completely encloses a portion of the handle. The Tai Pan sheath is of nice black leather, though I don’t like its design for a knife of this type. Thrusting left deep holes in both the shirt and the box, without pushing the box forward along the surface of the table. The Tai Pan sliced through both cloth and cardboard without trouble, easily cutting more than one layer where the box joints got in its way. Moving on to a cardboard box wrapped in an old shirt, I flayed the helpless box mercilessly. The spear point of the Tai Pan punctured it easily, rather than pushing the jug forward through the air. A much thicker iced tea jug was left with significant lacerations each time I hacked at it. Soda bottles were no match for it and came apart easily under its edge. I doubt anyone could pick up the Tai Pan and not be impressed with this aspect of it.īorrowing the idea from Pete Kautz’ excellent article in KnifeForums Magazine on test cutting, I suspended some plastic bottles from the ceiling to do test cutting with the Tai Pan. 379.99 Like its serpent namesake, the Tai Pan® is aggressively fast and deadly. My wife, examining the knife for me, commented on this before I could mention it. The Kraton® grip is very secure and quite comfortable. All you have to do to make a sheath is: 1. ![]() I made one for it pretty easily using some potato sack material and cardboard to line the inside. Also note that this knife does not comes with a sheath. Mine had a couple of nicks in the edge, but they were easy to smooth out with a nail file. Most daggers are notorious for having thin, fragile points that are easily broken. It's reasonably stiff and comes with a sharpened edge. Thompson in the distinctive 'Tanto' style, the Tai Pan embodies all the best features of a classic dagger while minimizing its shortcomings. The point of balance appears to be right below the oval, stainless steel guard, at the metal collar below that guard. Like its serpent namesake, Cold Steel's Tai Pan is aggressively fast and deadly. ![]() The pointed "skull crusher" pommel is a nice addition, too. The wide spear point is very strong and gives the knife an attractive, solid look. It handles quickly and well, spinning in my hand and shifting through grip transitions with ease. I took it out of the box and immediately fell in love with it. The Tai Pan is not small, either, at 13 inches in total length. This is obviously a fighting tool, 7 and ½ inches of AUSA 8A stainless steel blade honed to extremely sharp double edges. The Cold Steel Tai Pan is not a utility knife. ![]()
